Ferdinand David (1810-1873) was a German virtuoso violinist and composer who played as concert master in the Gewandhaus Orchestra. Originally Felix Mendelsohn promised Karl Traugott Queisser, a famous musician at the time, to compose a trombone concerto for him but as he did not have time to write it he asked his good friend David if he could use his composition instead. The piece was premiered at the Gewandhaus hall and was a great success. It is now well known within the trombone solo repertoire.
